Essay about The Benefits of Animal Testing are Too Great...
Animal Testing Animal testing began when William Harvey used animals 400 years ago to find out how blood circulated through the body. The modern era of animal research however started about 150 years ago with the rise of physiology as a science. It was very different back then. There were no anesthetics or effective painkillers, so the animals suffered a great deal, as did patients. Scientists learned that putting animals, or humans through that type of torture was inhumane. Consider having to have a leg amputated, which was not uncommon in those days due to the fact that infections got very severe without the use of antibiotics, without even so much as an anesthetic to control the pain. Now the treatment is there to help the pain, soâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It is very difficult, and in most cases simply not yet possible, to develop non-animal methods to replace the use of living animals. (RDS 2006). There are many myths to animal testing. Many groups such as Animal Liberation Front (ALF) contest that domestic animals are not receiving their rights and that this is not justice. (BBC. 2006) However, studies have shown and proven that only 0.4% of all research animals are cats, dogs, and monkeys. 80% of animals being used are mice, rats, fish, amphibians, birds, rabbits, and the occasional pig or sheep. No matter what the animal, being used, a licensed breeder must specially breed it. Another issue that is a big deal, yet is easily justified is the anesthetics. Anesthesia is used to prevent suffering. Most procedures (60% in the UK) are so mild that giving an anesthetic would mean more suffering than the experiment itself. (RDS 2006). Members of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) suggested that animals are not the same as humans so there is no logical reason to why they should test products on animals. Obviously there are differences between animals and people. Under the skin or fur, the biology of humans and other mammals is surprisingly similar. People have the same organs, controlled by the same nerves and hormones, like other species. When there are differences, researchers know about them. The differences can actually help scientificShow MoreRelatedAnimal Testing On Cosmetics : Its Not Necessary1620 Words à |à 7 Pagesââ¬Å"100,000-200,000 animals suffer and die just for cosmetics every year around the world.â⬠(Humanesociety.org). ââ¬Å¾the Yellow Wallpaperââ¬Å Autobiography or Fiction Free Essays
Assignment: ââ¬Å¾The Yellow Wallpaperââ¬Å": Autobiography or fiction? Regarding the first supporting evidence where this short story is regarded as an important work of feminist literature that illustrates the attitudes of the 19th century towards women, more specifically their mental and physical health which the author tried to show according to her personal experience. The short story is actually a first personal journal entry that was written by a woman whose husband was a physician that had confined her to a bedroom that he had rented for the summer. The women is forbidden to work and therefore she has to hide when she is writing in her journal because the husband believes that in this way she could recover from what he calls a ââ¬Å"temporary nervous depressionââ¬âa slight hysterical tendency;â⬠which was also a common diagnosis to women in the 19th century. We will write a custom essay sample on ââ¬Å¾the Yellow Wallpaperââ¬Å": Autobiography or Fiction or any similar topic only for you Order Now Furthermore, this story depicts the effect of confinement on the storytellerââ¬â¢s mental health, which is the woman and her fall into obsession because she has nothing to stimulate her so she becomes obsessed by the pattern and the color of the wallpaper. In the end, the woman imagines that there are other women creeping around behind the patters of the wallpaper, and comes to believe that she is one of them. The woman locks herself in the room with the torn yellow wallpaper and feels that now that it is the only place where she feels safe and refuses to leave. There are supporting elements within the story that makes the story an autobiography and not a fictional story. In my opinion, the way that the author writes in such detail and in such craze about the wallpaper only gives me proof that the author herself experienced this craze of obsession over petty things for the simple reason of being confined and not having anything better to do since she was on ââ¬Å"rest cureâ⬠and was not allowed to be with her child, work or even write. Basically, the details that the author writes about how something simple, like wallpaper can cause an obsession can only be written by a person that actually experienced such a feeling in such a situation as written in the story. Considering the second supporting evidence that Gilman herself gives a statement on why she wrote ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠. The author explained that the idea for the story originated from her own personal experience as a patient and also stating that ââ¬Å"the real purpose of the story was to reach Dr. S. Weir Mitchell (who was mentioned in the story itself) in order to convince him of the error in of his ways. â⬠Gilman had suffered from years of being depressed, and talked to a physician specializing in the ââ¬Å"rest cure. â⬠He put her on aà rest cure, advising her to live as domestic as possible and was forbidden to touch and doing anything that would stimulate her brain. After three months and almost completely giving up, Gilman decided to go against her diagnosis and continue to work and stimulate her mind again. And after she had realized how close she had come to the worst mental illness, she wrote ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠with additions and exaggerations to illustrate her point of misdiagnosis. In conclusion, ââ¬Å"The Yellow Wallpaperâ⬠is an exaggerated account ofà Charlotte Perkins Gilmanââ¬â¢s personal experiences where after being diagnosed and put on the ââ¬Å"rest cureâ⬠she eventually felt herself beginning to go slowly insane from the inactivity. However, unlike the protagonist in her story, Gilman did not reach the point of total madness, but she knew that her deteriorating mental condition was due to the oppressive medical regime that was meant to ââ¬Å"cureâ⬠her. In addition, Dr. Mitchell and his treatment play a key role in the story in the third section of the text where the protagonistââ¬â¢s husband even threatens to send her to Weir Mitchell in the fall if she does not recover soon. According to the above arguments and the supporting facts, it can only be stated that it can be nothing more than an autobiography consisting of exaggerated accounts of what the author was going through personally and thus giving the short story fictional elements. However, the short story is an autobiography for the simple reason of it being based on actual events and perceptions of the author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, even if it consists of exaggerated and thus fictional elements. Communal living is seen to be the traditional way of life in the Pacific. People are bound together by their culture and tradition. Therefore, this way of life is slowly declining and being forgotten due to many major reasons. Some of these major reasons for the decline in communal life within the Pacific are likely due to issues such as social change, economic and culture. Firstly one of the issues for the decline in communal living in the Pacific is social change. Migration is an issue related to social change, people looking for a diverse lifestyle elsewhere plays a major role in the decline in communal life in the Pacific. People want to experience a different way of life from the traditional communal way of living (Stahl Appleyard, 2007). For example, Cook Islanders that still reside in a communal way of living, everything from chores to eating and entertainment are done together with the other members of the family or community, but many are pulling away from this way of life because they prefer to do things on their own.. Also, to consider is the migration of people from a different culture and tradition into the pacific, who will have an influence on the Pacific islanders who may turn away from the communal lifestyle. Communal Life in the Pacific Almost every country is experiencing changes due to todayââ¬â¢s modern society. Communal life is the traditional way of living which has advantages from which most people can benefit in any society. This form of living is very common in some parts of the Pacific where most people are bound to be together with their traditions. However, it is important to consider that this traditional way of living is being forgotten today and there are many reasons for this decline in the communal life in the Pacific. The major reasons for the decline are in terms of cultural, social and economic. Firstly, there are cultural issues for the decline in the communal life in the Pacific. To begin with, one of the cultural issues leading to a decline in the communal life today is loss of culture which almost all the people in the society are experiencing. The decline in religious activities, ways of doing, habits, feelings and behavior of identity that had previously tied almost all the people together has caused them to fall apart. For example, in an Indian community in Fiji, the Hindus used to have a religious gathering known as Ramayana where followers of the Hindu ââ¬Å"dharmaâ⬠would gather together for this special occasion but today this gathering is dieing out in few places. Loss of culture, therefore, leads to a decline in commune way of living. A related aspect to the cultural issues is Westernization which is also one of the major reasons for the decline in the communal life. Strong influence of western cultures has changed the lifestyle of most of the people in many countries where by some people prefer to live as those of western countries do. For example, many Fijian villages were having an intentional community of people living together and sharing common interest in the society such as special gathering in villages when there is a new baby born or eating together when a big feast is held, however, today those traditions are no longer
